Decisions many families face at this stage
- How a needs assessment works and who should request one.
- How a financial assessment (means test) typically treats the home, savings and income.
- Whether NHS Continuing Healthcare funding should be considered.
- What options may exist where one spouse needs care and the other continues to live at home.
- Which decisions should be made with a solicitor, and which with a care manager, benefits adviser or regulated financial adviser.
What we can help with
We work with families to understand the facts of the situation, identify the right professional support and avoid common missteps — such as transferring property under pressure without taking advice. If specialist regulated advice is needed we will tell you plainly and help you find it.
What we will not do
We will not promise that a home can be kept out of a financial assessment when care is already imminent. Transfers made at that point are the most likely to raise deprivation of assets concerns under the current rules. Honest guidance now saves worse surprises later.
A conversation is the first step
If a hospital discharge is being discussed, or you have just been given a care home figure, a short conversation can help you work out what to do first and what questions to ask.
